Yuffie's Side Quest
Yuffie's Side Quest must be done in either Disk One or Disk Two. You must have, obviously, obtained Yuffie, but she does not need to be in your party. You can begin this quest as soon as you have the Tiny Bronco, and the quest is an important step in getting Yuffie to date you at the Gold Saucer.
The quest starts on the Western Continent. If you have the Tiny Bronco, you'll have to land on the southern shore of the continent, then head north up a sloped path to a bridge. On the way, you'll enter a plain where Yuffie will come and warn you of some 'danger' ahead. If you have a Chocobo or the Highwind, you'll still come across this screen regardless of where you've landed. In any case, she'll run off when two Shinra Guards attack, leaving you to deal with them. Moreover, you'll notice that you no longer have any Materia!
She can take around 50 materia, so its possible to be left with a few remaining. She will take Master, Summon, Independent, Command, Support then Magic Materia in order of preference.
You'll need to start a long trek to the north section of the continent. You won't be able to use any vehicles, but if you were on a Chocobo when you went into the plain, you'll still be on it. The path is quite straightforward, but there are many battles, and there are usually three or four enemies to battle at once (How convenient). Eventually you'll reach a small town by the name of Wutai.

Yuffie will see you and escape. Head to the northwest corner of town and follow the path to the pagoda structure in the background. Enter the building on the right and follow the passage down to a room where a man in blue is sleeping. Keep talking to him, and Yuffie will show up, only to be chased away by the man (who is, incidently, Godo, her father). Enter the room to the bottom right and examine the bottom wall to reveal a secret passage. There's a Hairpin for Red XIII at the end. Return to the entrance and the room there is available for you to rest for free. There's also a Magic Shuriken for Yuffie if you examine the scroll on the wall.
Return to town and head inside the restaurant. It's the Turks! Talk to all of them (They're on vacation, lucky for you) then head to the Item Shop. Examine the chest and you'll recieve an MP Absorb Materia, only to have it swiped instantly by Yuffie! Follow her to the Old Man's House and examine the folding screen - she'll dart outside. Go to the large white pot outside the restaurant and examine it - you'll corner her, and she'll be forced to take you back to her house.
You'll see a small sequence in which two Shinra Soldiers talk with the Turks. After that, you'll be in Yuffie's house. Follow her downstairs and talk to her. She'll tell you to pull one of the levers to retrieve your materia.. but both of them will cause a cage to drop on your friends! Examine the levers to release the cage, and head to the Pagoda.
Chime the bell on the left by examining it, and you'll reveal a secret door. Head through and you'll find that both Yuffie and Elena have been taken hostage by none other than Don Corneo. Grab a Swift Bolt to your right and an Elixir to your left. Head up the stairs and you'll be in the statue room of Godo's House where you'll be attacked by three Shinra Guards. Head outside.
Here Rude and Reno will agree on a truce with you. Head back to Wutai and go to the Da Chao Statues. Follow the path northwest, then take the north fork to the next screen. Circle north and west to the next screen, then head north at the fork and into the cave (Talk to Rude and he'll move aside). The chest there has a Dragoon Lance for Cid. You'll need the Leviathan Scales to get across the fire pits. Head outside and south, and you'll meet Corneo. He's imprisoned Yuffie and Elena on the face of the statue, and he'll summon a boss to attack you.
| RAPPS |
Level 39 | 6000 HP | 300 MP |
| Without your materia, you'll be relying heavily on items for curative purpose. His strongest attack is Aero3 which will cause upwards of 1200 damage. Another attack is his tail sting, which may inflict Poison. Keep those Max Potions and Phoenix Downs handy, and just keep attacking. Limit Breaks will deal severe damage to him. If you want to, use damage-inflicting items like that Swift Bolt you got earlier. |
You'll recieve a Peace Ring after you've killed Rapps. Corneo will then ask you a question, and simply pick any answer. Rude and Reno will show up and they'll deal with Corneo and you'll end up back in Yuffie's house where she'll return all your materia. She'll apologise and you'll walk out, and end up back on the World Map.
That's officially the end of the sidequest, but there's more to do. Return to Wutai and go into the house near Yuffie's house - it's full of cats. Climb up the stairs at the back of the house and head up the passage way to find a chest with an HP Absorb materia.
The Pagoda Challenge
Put Yuffie in your party and you'll be able to take the Pagoda Challenge - five battles to the top to receive a reward. The battles aren't consecutive, so you can heal and return. If Yuffie is killed, you won't get a Game Over, but you'll have to revive her before she can fight again. If you have the Enemy Skill Materia, make sure you have Big Guard, Lv4 Suicide and Magic Hammer (from the Razor Weeds north of Wutai), they will be infintely useful during these battles. The bosses are as follows.
| GORKY |
Weak to Wind | Level 30 | 3000 HP | 150 MP |
| An easy battle. Start with Big Guard and proceed to attack and heal as necessary. You'll receive an X Potion when you win. |
| SHAKE |
Level 32 | 4000 HP | 180 MP |
| Extremely easy. Cast Lv4 Suicide and one hit should kill him off. You'll receive a Turbo Ether when you win. |
| CHEKHOV |
Level 34 | 5000 HP | 210 MP |
| Careful of Stare Down, it causes paralysis. Big Guard will help heaps, and just keep attacking away. You'll receive an Ice Ring when you win. |
| STANIV |
Level 36 | 6000 HP | 240 MP |
| Just like Shake, Lv4 Suicide and one attack should kill him. You'll receive an Elixir when you win. |
| GODO |
Level 41 | 10000 HP | 1000 MP |
Very, very difficult. He has three heads, each with different attacks. One will use physical attacks, one will use magic and status attacks, and one will cure him. There are two approaches to this. Firstly is to use the Magic Hammer Enemy Skill to suck his MP so he can't use any of it, and then proceed to kill him. The other method is to simply attack, cure, and hope you're lucky.
Godo is able to cast Trine (Lightning magic damage, Enemy Skill) and Bio2 (Poison magic damage), as well as Cure2 which heals around 1200 HP.
You'll receive All Creation, Yuffie's Lv4 Limit Break Manual, for your efforts, and Godo will also give you the Leviathan summon materia for beating the Pagoda. |
