It's our final night in the beautiful city of Krakow, and we've just come back from the Salt Mines tour. We're on our own for dinner so I pull out my regular tools to find a nice Polish restaurant to remember our time here by. This restaurant is between KFC and McDonalds but down a long corridor so it's not very inviting to the average tourist.

Mains

Grilled pork with garlic sauce
It smells amazing. The pork is perhaps a bit overcooked but the sauce is delicious. I'm scooping it up with some bread from the starters. The small potatoes have been soaking up the cream and garlic and they're absolutely divine. I've ordered a cucumber salad to go with my mains, and it's dressed with tzatziki. It's so light and balances the thick, rich sauce perfectly.

What a great meal! Prices here are so affordable - the pork, salad and drink cost me $13.50 NZD.

Food Style? Czech

We've been walking around the west side of the river and it's time to grab some food. I've noticed a lot of Czech restaurants around - perfect. I would love to try something local. I can't pronounce the name of this restaurant but it's rated highly on my usual websites, and they have a convenient English menu available online, so it's a goer. We're the first to arrive in the restaurant but it fills up quickly within five minutes.

Entree #1

Baked Goat's Cheese with honey, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, pear chutney
Theo was upsold by the waiter and got the chèvre. Perfect texture - crispy on the outside and soft and creamy inside. The pear combination is on point, it helps to cut through the savoury and saltiness of the cheese, much like a quince or chutney would if you were having cheese and crackers.

Entree #2

Grilled Calamari with rocket salad and lime dressing
I chose the squid. Lovely grilled flavour with the nice zesty lemon juice, but unfortunately very overlooked. It's quite tough and borderline unpleasant, but I'm hungry and at least it tastes nice. The salad is alright, nothing special.

Mains

Confit of Duck Leg with red cabbage and apples, and homemade potato gnocchi
It has that winter feel to it, with lots of rich flavours, pickled vegetables, and creamy carbs. The duck is a bit salty by itself but with the potato and bread, it's absolutely delicious, with the pickled red cabbage taking the edge off that richness. If the duck had crispy skin, it would be a perfect dish. The carbs are incredibly filling and I don't think I have room for dessert!

Food Style? Pancakes

Our first proper meal in Prague is in Old Town, at a very unassuming pancake store off the tourist track called Den Noc. Jordan has recommended this one to me, and it's on the way to many of the sights we wanted to see. It's 2.20pm and we've made it just before the closing time of 3pm. Den Noc means Day/Night, for when the sun sets, this quaint pancakery turns into a trendy wine bar!

Pancake

Bacon, avocado, feta cheese, basil and lime pancake
Very good. Fluffy and light pancakes, with a very generous amount of avocado and bacon in between. The bacon isn't crispy, but it's nice and salty, and with the feta, it provides enough flavour to go with the pancakes and avocado. The lime is subtle, but noticeable, just taking the edge of the very cheesy feta.

Food Style? Swiss Fondue and Raclette

I'm back in Switzerland, land of cheese and very expensive things. I've already had raclette when I was visiting France, and though it's not really the season to do it, I want to try fondue. I'm here with my travel buddy Theo, so we're going to share a fondue that is half vacherin and half gruyere, with wine and kirsch.

Fondue

Fondue Fribourgeoise - half gruyere, half vacherin cheese with wine and kirsch, with picked onions and gherkins
Holy moly. What a feast we have - potatoes, bread, gherkins and pickled onions on the side to dip into the delicious cheese. It's excellent and the perfect winter warmer, even though it's summer and 30C outside. The alcohol in the cheese is quite noticeable and I love it. The sourness in the gherkin is my favourite thing in front of me, it really brings out the saltiness in the cheese.

The end of the meal is nigh and the waitress offers to extract the cheesy crust from the bottom of the pot. It's accumulated all the saltiness and cheesiness of the meal and it's absolutely delicious. Apparently if you've done it right, the crust should remain intact and in a single piece as you take it out!

It's a wonder that something so simple is so tasty. Theo is pleasantly surprised, he hasn't experienced anything like that at all. I think since I've had raclette, I had an idea of what flavours to expect. In any case, well played, Swiss people, well played.

I've had food poisoning again. I had to cancel a reservation at a very well rated traditional Dutch restaurant last night, I was so sad. I'm so hungry now that I've lost all regard for my wellbeing and want something good because it's my last few hours in Amsterdam and I've missed out on so much.

Lizzie gave me this recommendation and I could use "a bit" of sugar to pick up my energy and spirits while I'm at it. The pancakes here are massive and I probably won't be able to finish it, but I'm going to try. I have to choose the Dutch pancake, since I'm in the Netherlands and all.

Pancake

Dutch Pancake - pancake with stroopwafel chunks, cinnamon ice cream, chocolate flakes and whipped cream
It's damn good. Wow. The stroopwafel buried inside the pancake is really something, and the cinnamon ice cream helps to mellow the sweetness of the whole thing. The pancake itself is not too bad, a nice soft texture, but it just seems irrelevant compared to everything else on the plate. I've already discarded all the whipped cream on the plate, but still don't know if I'll finish this.

Nope. Tapping out with a quarter to go. So sad! Damn you food poisoning.
